Changing trends in Humanities

Defining humanities is an onerous task. However, it can be understood as an academic discipline which deals with the study of human society by utilising methodologies, which are usually analytical, critical and speculative.

As we have completed the second decade of the 21st century, a tremendous change has been recorded in the mindset of people in relation to this stream. Since past it has always been considered as a stream for academically weak students. But in the recent era with the spread of awareness about the diverse options which are provided by this stream, there has been a rapid increase in the number of students opting for this stream.

Humanities is such a broad domain that it helps the students to achieve a better understanding of themselves and the world around them. There are umpteen options of subjects available under this stream. This includes literature, philosophy, geography, history, political science, psychology, sociology, legal studies, performing arts, home science etc.

These subjects offer exciting career choices for students. One can build a successful career in the field of designing, travel and tourism, hotel management, multimedia, law, anthropology, cartography etc. The professionals who are shaped out of this stream are generally historians, curators, counsellors, lawyers, archaeologists, anthropologists, journalists, artists, travel agents, interpreters etc. Presently there are also many vocational courses offered by the CBSE board for students to opt in grades XI and XII which include food nutrition and dietetics, music production, beauty and wellness, marketing, information and technology, media etc.

These courses further help the students to develop a well-rounded personality and to be independent in future.

A real growth has been recently witnessed in the field of humanities and this field helps in digging out the creativity of the students. According to a noted American industrialist J. IRWIN MILLER, “The calling of the humanities is to make us truly human in the best sense of the word.”
